Matt Winslett

Software Engineer

Matt Winslett has been a valued member of the T‑Kartor team since April 2022. Currently working as a Software Engineer, Matt’s path into the geospatial world has been characterized as interdisciplinary and unique.

Matt began his academic journey as, of all things, a history major, pairing it with a minor in geography. While history was his original focus, geography steadily captured his attention, especially the analytical and problem‑solving aspects behind spatial thinking.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Matt continued to explore this interest by earning a geospatial certificate. That decision marked a turning point, shifting his career trajectory toward geospatial development and software engineering.

Before joining T‑Kartor, Matt became familiar with the company through industry partnerships. When an opportunity opened, U.S. CEO Simon Bailey, a connection, encouraged him to apply, which ultimately led Matt to T‑Kartor as a Geospatial Developer.

Over time, his role evolved, and he transitioned into his current position as a Software Engineer, allowing him to focus on building and improving tools that support analysts across teams.

What Matt enjoys most about his work is solving problems and improving tools. Whether that means refining an existing workflow or developing new functionality, his goal is always the same: to make analysts’ jobs easier and more efficient.

Matt thrives in T‑Kartor’s collaborative environment, where developers, analysts, and colleagues across the U.S. and Sweden work closely together. He appreciates the openness of the culture and the way teams stay informed about new initiatives and opportunities, reinforcing a shared, problem‑solving mindset.

Matt also appreciates the team's drive for innovation and how everyone is always seeking new technologies to apply to their work.

Looking ahead, Matt sees the geospatial industry continuing to evolve rapidly. He believes AI will play an increasingly supportive role, acting as a tool to assist rather than replace human expertise.

Matt also expects geospatial tools to become more accessible, empowering domain experts outside traditional GIS roles to work more directly with spatial data. Cross‑platform collaboration, he notes, will only grow in importance as geospatial data becomes embedded across more industries.

For those new to the geospatial field, Matt’s advice is simple but thoughtful: understand the underlying processes. He encourages newcomers to stay open to alternative approaches and to focus not just on tools, but on the reasoning behind them. Gaining insight into how systems work and why decisions are made is extremely valuable.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his family (he has two children, ages 11 and 17). Matt enjoys playing games, going for walks, or getting outdoors for camping or fishing.

When asked to sum up his experience at T‑Kartor, Matt keeps it simple: it’s a great place to work with a great group of people.

That sense of collaboration, support, and shared purpose is what continues to make his journey at T‑Kartor rewarding.
