InterconnectWestMidlands(BirminghamUK)

A system of information to connect the journey experience

A project to improve the quality of information across all media channels, transport services and public environments (Since 2012).

Context

Interconnect was designed to connect the journey experience by improving the quality of information across all media channels, transport services and public environments.

A core data platform, or ‘knowledge hub’ provides accurate, consistent information in a variety of formats to people when and where they need it. The integration of transport and pedestrian information make a seamless experience for people moving about the region.

Scope

A GIS database was developed as part of T-Kartor’s wayfinding mapping platform, allowing mapping content to be expanded in stages across the wider region and maintained independently of outputs. The basemap has been expanded in several phases (linked to funding streams) to include nearby settlements of Coventry, Solihull and Longbridge.

Automated production tools made the creation of a large number of information products possible, including updates required when a new tram system and central station changed the face of the city centre.

Adhering to advanced design specifications, map products are output as both ‘light’ and ‘dark’ versions in two scales.

Light base pedestrian totems include tourist information layers describing the character of an area, including retail and heritage aspects.

Dark base transport totems include transport data overlays and real time information to help simplify the public transport system

T-Kartor’s online portal is used for asset management, content analysis and the planning of product updates across the system.

Deliverables

Transport for West Midlands has taken delivery of four royalty free GIS basemaps, while T-Kartor retains a working copy on our GIS platform and provide regular updates. Royalty free mapping allows unlimited distribution and usage rights, intended to allow local businesses (including hotels, higher education and retail) to benefit from the resource.

More than 180 pedestrian and public transport signs have been installed at key positions. Themed printed maps covering Birmingham City Centre include a retail shopping map, a visitor guide and an overview of local public transport.

Birmingham will host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 with over half a million spectators expected. T-Kartor’s mapping database will play an important role in providing these visitors, many new to the city, with accurate information.

We create and maintain geographical information, maps and charts – and always strive to develop innovative solutions.
