United Kingdom Hydrographic OfficeUnited Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is one of the world's largest hydrographic offices serving mariners globally with navigational products like charts and nautical publications in paper and various digital forms. More than 10.000 individual products are produced and maintained by the UKHO.
The UKHO receives over 4.500 charts and maps and more than 50.000 Notices to Mariners every year from foreign Governments. All these documents has to be registered and assessed for impact on the UKHO products. The initial assessement takes place within 24 hours.
BAE Insyte together with T-Kartor Group developed the Source Data Receipt and Assessment system (SDRA) for the (UKHO). SDRA is essentially a secure geographic-aware electronic document / records management system with an integrated workflow system, for up to 300 users at the UKHO on their main production network. SDRA allows the UKHO to electronically capture and store all incoming correspondence and data that might affect any UKHO product (e.g. BA Navigation Charts, BA publications) and assess the impact of such documents on UKHO’s products.
The system is the first time a Geographic Information System (GIS) has been successfully combined with a document management system to create a controlled environment for geographic document management.

SDRA provides facilities to store all documents electronically along with associated metadata, allows all geographic documents to be given a spatial extent and geo-referenced on screen to all other known data in the same location, and to be assessed for its potential effect on the UKHO’s products.
SDRA went into live production during June 2006. Since then no major failures have been observed on the system which has registered close to 1.5 million documents. One successful enhancement to the system has been implemented and a further enhancement to the searching and querying functions is in progress. The enhancements have been designed in close cooperation with the customer based on the experiences gained during daily operation.T-Kartor Contact:
