A wayfinding system for London which has generated 20,000 individual map products and tracks changes to keep them current. 

T-Kartor has produced public transport information for Transport for London since 2000, including a range of products for all modes of transport. We developed the Legible London mapping database during 2010 to feed thousands of map products with the same specially designed basemap. This highly successful mapping information has been used to support strategies ever since, including the Cycle Hire initiative, congestion charges and cashless buses, the London 2012 Olympic Games and Cycle Superhighways.

Over 20,000 products featuring Legible London mapping are tracked via LLAMA, our online Content Management Portal, and updated as necessary.

A mapping brand for New York which includes specially designed products for pedestrian, Bikeshare, Select Bus Service (BRT) and Subway exit maps.

New York City Department of Transportation commissioned the creation of an integrated wayfinding and public transit information system in 2012. The system offers pedestrians a series of stylised maps, orientated to ‘heads up’ so the top of the map is always displaying the same direction that the user is facing. This is, in part a reaction to research that showed 33% of people on the streets of the city could not identify which direction was North. The same research highlighted that 13% of locals were not aware of the neighbourhood or borough they were in when questioned.

Two hundred Walk New York wayfinding signs have been created, as well as 450 Bikeshare information products and ad-hoc leaflets covering NYC boroughs. MTA in collaboration with DOT are piloting 80 bus stop information totems for the Select Bus Service, SBS. The MTA has ordered 450 subway exit maps to be placed at exit points on the network.

“This partnership with the MTA allows for consistent maps above and below ground, making it easier for users to reach their destinations,” said NYC DOT Commissioner and MTA Board Member Polly Trottenberg. “We’re excited to provide this resource to New Yorkers and tourists to find their way in the city.”

A best practise example of wayfinding information including specialised maps for tourism and shopping

T-Kartor created the Interconnect West Midlands wayfinding basemap as part of a core system to connect the journey experience. The project, sponsored by Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Combined Authority, Marketing Birmingham and Local Business Districts, seeks to improve the quality of information across all media channels, transport services and public environments.

Our data-driven approach is designed specifically to accommodate these principles. A core basemap is continually updated to feed automated product outputs. The basemap is flexilble and scalable, allowing staged expansion and multiple output formats. Our online management portal provides change detection, stakeholder communication and maintenance planning.

The basemap extends over Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry and mapping products include 100 Area Navigation Totems, 50 Bus Stop Totems, interactive screens at major interchanges and printed maps for shopping and tourism.

A set of tools for automating the production of passenger transport information in-house

T-Kartor were commissioned by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) in 2006 to create tools for automating the production of passenger transport information. SYPTE has its own staff for creating transport information, including GIS capabilities. The challenge here was to create larger volumes of information with regular, accurate updates within a limited budget.

We developed a suite of tools, to be operated in-house, providing the following information products:

  • Geographic Location Maps – centred on a hub of bus stops, these products include an automated destination finder with relevant bus route/stop combinations
  • Bus Corridor Maps – an automated bus map showing a limited number of routes sharing a ‘bus corridor’
  • Single Line of Route Bus Map – published in timetable booklets, these products show the full geographic extent of a singe bus route including named bus stops
  • Semi-automated Spider Map – Bus Spider Maps, developed by Transport for London (with help from T-Kartor) in 2000, are clear, simple visualisations of complex bus networks. Our tool semi-automates the process to reduce production times by over 80%
  • Batch Update Tool – with a wealth of information created and displayed to the public, this tool provides tracking and change detection to help plan the update process

A mapping database to underpin the wayfinding strategy for the City of Toronto

TO 360 is a wayfinding strategy for Toronto with the goal of ‘supporting walking to unlock multi-modal transportation in the city’. The strategy started during October 2012 in order to coincide with the Toronto 2015 Pan Am games.

The large scale, detailed ‘heads-up’ mapping design was inspired by our other world class wayfinding systems Legible London, Interconnect West Midlands and Walk NYC, using public consultations to arrive at a design which combines users’ favourite elements.

An innovative suite of information products to present an unusual transport system

T-Kartor was commissioned in 2008 to create a suite of public transport information for Kolumbus, Stavanger, focused on bus and ferry transport. The products created included topographic and schematic maps, from small scale network coverage maps to large scale simplified schematics around key hubs and important buildings.

The unusual topography of Stavanger (straddling the mouth of a fjord in a mountainous landscape) leads to a heavy dependance on ferries as part of the passenger journey and long, irregular bus routes. This led us to a design approach showing hillshading along bus networks, a bus corridor concept along the 3 hubs and multi-modal ferry and bus maps.

A royalty free basemap that is suited to the city mapping design and can be used in all types of information

T-Kartor produced a royalty free basemap for Dublin Bus to use on public facing passenger information. The basemap was provided for the cartographic staff at Dublin Bus to create their own cut-out maps for specific information products.

Two scales were produced: a larger scale city centre map shows bus stops and places of interest on a simplified road map. The style of this mapping matches existing wayfinding mapping, although of a smaller scale requiring fewer updates. A smaller scale regional map includes bus route profiles, which are edited to align with the underlying road base.

Together these two scales and the level of detail included can be used to provide a family of information products centred around bus service users.

An automated system for creating thousands of bus map products for the Paris region (Île-de-France)

Passenger information is a requirement for all of the 40,000 bus stops in the Île-de-France. Previously it has proved difficult for the STIF to coordinate 80 separate bus service operators to produce this information to a consistent high standard. T-Kartor’s online production system will automate the production of the information, allowing bus service operators to login, order and download information for the appropriate bus stops, then print and mount the posters at bus stops.

The maps, produced by T-Kartor to meet the STIF’s detailed design specifications, comprise a basemap with relevant places of interest. A 5 minute walk circle is added to help users appreciate the distances involved. Bus stops symbolised within the 5 minute walk circle are accompanied by a routes tabs which denote the bus routes serving the stop and the end destination to show direction.

Map based information to enhance the passenger experience for bus, tram, ferry, train and cycle journeys

Stockhom have recently launched a new graphic profile for the transport system, with beautifully designed, clear and functional signage appearing on the subway and at bus, ferry and tram stops. T-Kartor are developing a basemap to complement the new design across a broad family of products.

Our mapping is flexible and scalable enough to be adapted for specific products by adding appropriate data layers (eg. cycle lanes/infrastructure) to create bespoke information. The basemap can be implemented in stages and concentrated in areas of higher density of information products. Our system will include online change detection and asset tracking tools for basemap and product maintenance management.
