Using public transport information to influence travel choices.
Since it was established in 2000 Transport for London has been creating information to support government strategies aimed at increasing the use of public transport. Public transport information based on great mapping is used to publicise the bredth of choice of transport available, influencing choice towards favourable methods of transport. T-Kartor are one of the main suppliers of this information.
Strategy examples
London Cycle Hire
Goal: to encourage an increase in cycling as a means of transport by 400%.
Measure: 360 cycle hire docking stations were established in Central London making 5000 cycles cheaply available to the public.
T-Kartor supported this campaign by producing 1600 cycle hire maps at cycle docking stations encorporating a new map design based on ‘heads-up’ mapping including 3D building models.
Oyster Cards
Goal: Speed the flow of passengers through the transport system by replacing cash with swipe cards.
T-Kartor: supported this campaign by producing 13,000 individual A4 Vicinity Maps at bus stops showing the nearest ticket outlets.
Congestion Charging
Goal: Reduce congestion in Central London by introducing a daily charge.
Result: Car traffic in Central London was reduced by 30% almost overnight, with an equivalent increase in the use of buses over time. £127 million was raised per year by this scheme, all of which was reinvested in the public
transport system.
T-Kartor: supported this policy with the creation and update of hundreds of bus spider maps which became necessary when 50 new bus routes were introduced coinciding with the introduction of the scheme.
The best information for each stage of the journey
A journey rarely consists of a single mode of transport. This is why transport hubs and multi-modal interchanges are important places for comprehensive, well placed information. Choice and awareness of alternatives are very important factors in changing people’s behavior towards public transport.
T-Kartor has over 10 years’ experience of public transport design, aimed at presenting the best information for each stage of a journey:
• interactive transport maps on the internet for planning a journey
• schematic bus spider maps at bus and multi-modal interchanges
• corridor bus maps along major bus corridors
• local vicinity maps for ending a journey on foot or cycle.
